PART TWO – Chapter Three
Four days later…
Commander Robeson stopped the video feed and turned toward the group, “There are one hundred and ninety-six countries on this planet. Eighty-two of them including the United States all reported natural disasters throughout their borders simultaneously on June 21, sixteen hundred hours, Eastern. There were no early warning detected. Meteorologist have no idea what is going on. There has been no shifting of the tectonic plates, nothing here that would lead to what we have been experiencing.” Walking around the front of the conference table, he turned away from the table to the monitors lining the wall. “Anything discussed here in this room, will remain in this room. It is not to be discussed among yourselves unless you are working the project.” Commander Robeson gestured toward the large video screens, “First Lieutenant Brown was investigating the Karman Line at the exact same time as the land occurrences began. Copies of his report are there before you.”
Robyn’s heart stuttered at the mention of Christopher’s name. She’d seen his name on the list for the meeting attendees. Now that the monitors were fully laminated, she could see him. Stealing glances, she smiled softly, he was handsome. She loved him in uniform. Getting back to the meeting, she read through Christopher’s report. He described what he’d witness as a shifting wave of rippling energy. But waves didn’t just ‘happen’. They had to have a starting point…something that literally pushed them into existence. Something was coming.
Lieutenant Gregory raised his hand to speak. Gesturing at the screen, he address one of the monitors. “Lieutenant Brown, what did you mean by “shifting wave of rippling energy” exactly?”
Christopher snapped to attention at the sound of his name. He’d been watching her through the monitor. She was still so beautiful. “It is hard to explain. But I was able to catch one of the waves on my jet’s digital recorder.” Pressing a button off screen, Chris started the video, he captured while in flight.
The room watched the video. Robyn gasped at the slight ripples that distorted the picture. Bracing herself for the sound of his name, a name she hadn’t spoken in over a year. She spoke up once the video ended. “First Lieutenant Brown, how many disturbances did you experience?”
Chris jerked back at his name on her lips. His mind in jumbles. Shaking his head, he cleared his throat. He hadn’t heard his name from lips in a year. His voice a bit harsh, he responded. “As you see in my report, I stated that the wave occurred three times.”
Shaking her head at his answer, “No…no…that’s not…” She was cut off.
Chris cut her off, defending his report, “No offense Officer Fenty, but I was there and I know what I saw…what I experienced”
“I’m not saying you didn’t experience it, I’m saying it’s not what was originally thought. The test findings show that the planet underwent multiple natural disasters at the same time. We went over the test taken after your experience First Lieutenant and found a discrepancy in the Earth’s orbit.” Glancing at Commander Robeson, she pointed to the video. “May I sir?”
“By all means Officer Fenty, please. Admiral Williams requested that you be here because of your background in astrophysics. I was told if anyone could figure this puzzle out, it would be you.”
Blushing a bit at the compliment, Robyn stood and rushed to the front of the room. “Thank you sir.” Turning to the screen, she replayed the video. Which also played for Christopher and his group. She began counting in rhythm. 1…1, 2, 3. 1…1, 2. 3.” Pausing the video, she began figuring out what they were really looking at. “It’s not just a wave sir. First Lieutenant did experience the wave but it wasn’t a wave of energy. It was a wave and pulses of energy, two separate occurrences at once. One…the wave followed by three deliberate pulses of energy.”
Officer Adams spoke up, “So isn’t that what the Lieutenant just said, a wave of rippling energy?” his tone insinuating that she was wasting their time.
“No…it is a wave AND energy pulses not an energy wave…not one singular action; two actions.” She answered.
Adams still didn’t see the point of her statement. “We are still looking at a wave of energy.
Sighing heavily, her level of annoyance at Adams attitude was rising. “No…look a wave is a disturbance that moves along a medium- in this case Space- from one end to the other. If you watch an ocean wave moving along the medium (the ocean water), one can observe that the crest of the wave is moving from one location to another over a given interval of time. The crest is observed to cover distance. Meaning the waves the First Lieutenant experienced were…are being pushed in front of something. The wave was a simple result of a moving object coming towards us.”
“Are?” Commander Robeson asked. He understood what she was saying but how long had the waves been coming?
“Yes sir. I believe that these waves and pulses have been hitting the Earth for at least a year. That was when natural disasters began happening in places not known for that type of storm or quake. Virginia began having quakes then. Nevada began flooding, Chicago began having quakes as well and New York experiencing tornados. The Hoover Dam showing more…deeper stress cracks. None of those cities should have experienced those type of disasters. And should the Dam collapse everything below would flood out. That is 10 trillion gallons of water, 590ft deep. Imagine the damage and the depleted water source. The waves are a result but the pulses are deliberate and they are strong enough to cut through the interstellar medium over quite a distance.”
“How do you know how far away it is?” Christopher asked, jotting down notes as she spoke. Her mind had always been amazing to him. “You said quite a distance?”
“By that I simply meant that it is not inside of our solar system, so it is quite a distance away. But moving steadily. The closer it gets, the stronger the waves. That probably explains why you could see it. You’ve been exploring the Karman Line for over a year now and this is the first time you’ve seen the disturbance even though atmospheric disturbances have been happening in that year.”
“But what if the disturbances happened on different days…days when I wasn’t up?” Chris asked. She was right, he hadn’t seen them before now.
We still have satellites orbiting the earth, they would have picked them up, had they been as strong as the one you experienced. I will be looking at the data coming from the satellite’s records over the last year.”
Matthew had been quiet up until now. “You mentioned “strong enough to cut through interstellar medium. What’s that?”
Robyn felt her stomach drop. She’d forgotten Matt was in the meeting, so caught up in her reaction to Christopher’s voice and video presence. “Interstellar medium is the matter that exists in the space between the star systems in a galaxy. This matter includes gas in ionic, atomic, and molecular form, dust, and cosmic rays. It fills interstellar space and blends smoothly into the surrounding intergalactic space. The energy that occupies the same volume, in the form of electromagnetic radiation, is the interstellar radiation field. When we watch the recording the video is disturbed, we see the wave and what appeared to be tiny ripples originally are actually similar to transient electromagnetic disturbances.”
Officer Cassidy sputtered over the monitor, “An EMP? How would an EMP exist in space?”
Shaking her head, she glanced around the table, “I have no idea. And while it fried the Lieutenant’s jet, it had no electromagnetic effect on the Earth. But it is most definitely aimed at the Earth with enough momentum to push the mass out of orbit” Moving to the laptop attached to the monitors, she opened a file. Splitting the screen she put the earth on one side and Christopher’s video on the other. Laying another program over both, measurements colored each screen. “Here’s the difference. On the left the position of the earth the day before the Lieutenant’s video. On the right the Earth’s position moments after the pulses hit. The Earth has literally been shifted out of its prior orbital path.”
Chris sat forward, “So is that causing the weather shifts?”
Nodding, she paused…his voice was having such an effect on her. “Possibly…most likely. Orbital shifts have been known to reform the Earth. It is widely believed that the Sahara dried up due to a change in the Earth’s orbit, which affects solar insolation, or the amount of electromagnetic energy the Earth receives from the Sun. In simpler terms, insolation refers to the amount of sunlight shining down on a particular area at a certain time.” she pointed at the monitors again, but in this case, it like we are slowly being pushed out of the Sun’s trajectory and with the shift, the Moon’s as well. It is affecting us in a drastic way.”
“Why is this happening? What is throwing pulses?” Lieutenant Gregory asked. He was truly fascinated by what she was explaining. What could push a planet the size of Earth out of orbit?
Chris spoke up, “Not only what but how soon will it make contact?”
Commander Robeson, turned from the monitor to Robyn. He was astounded by the information Officer Fenty had imparted. The Admiral hadn’t exaggerated when he’d described Fenty’s mind. ‘Sharp analytical skills and quick calculations. “
Shaking her head, “That brings us back to the wave itself. As I said before, the crest of a wave is observed to cover distance. The speed of an object refers to how fast an object is moving and is usually expressed as the distance traveled per time of travel. In the case of a wave, the speed is the distance traveled by a given point on the wave -such as a crest- in a given interval of time. The problem we have, is the waves in this case are virtually invisible, only detectable by a slight disturbance. I can probably create an equation that can measure an approximate distance. In order to do that I will need all of First Lieutenant Brown’s test results and research but I do not have clearance for that sir.”
Raising his hand, he stopped her, “You will have what you need. You and Lt. Brown can work together. Can you work via monitor or do you need to be physically in the same environment?”
Panic struck her, “No…no sir. Monitors are fine.” She took a moment to calm herself.
Nodding, Robeson glanced around the room, his gaze lighting on each member before coming to Kemp. “Captain Kemp, do you have any other questions?”
“No sir, I believe Officer Fenty has explained things quite clearly. Now we wait and try to figure out what is coming our way. With her here and Lt Brown in Virginia, all bases are covered. Lt Brown, when is your next visit to the Karman Line?” Watching the young officer, he was more than a bit apprehensive. He knew the history between Robyn and Christopher and the idea of the two of them working together was not a pleasant one. He’d always felt like Robyn was holding something back from him and he knew it had to do with Christopher.
“Alright until Officer Fenty and Lt Brown can get us an idea of what and when, you will all go back to your normal duties. Dismissed.” He left the conference move, followed by everyone but Matt, Cassidy and Robyn.
Robyn was busy shutting down her applications. Chris had not is disconnected, she could see that he was still active. His voice made her jump, glancing around she saw Matt talking to Cassidy.
“Hey Navy girl. Been a long time.” Chris smiled softly as she slowly raised her head, green eyes bright and glassy.
Robyn stared into the monitor, “Hey fly boy.”
“How have you been?” He knew it was small talk but what else could he say?”
“I’ve been good. You?” She followed his lead.
“Good….I’ve missed you. I never got a chance to say good bye you know.” He laid it on the line.
Shaking her head slowly, she ducked her head and finished packing her equipment. “I can’t do this…can’t…” She stopped suddenly as Matt came up behind her. “Matt! I mean Captain Kemp. Have you met First Lieutenant Brown?”
“We have met. The last time I went to Virginia. First lieutenant is the country’s best pilot. Good to see you again Brown.” Waving he took Robyn’s equipment and moved towards the door waiting for her.
“Bye Chris. Talk to you after I receive the research.” She watched him pack up his notes.
“Bye Robz. I should have my research sent over tomorrow morning. I’ll give you a call around 10 am your time.”
“Ok.” Breathing she tried to calm herself. How was she going to get through this? A year and she felt like she’d never left home.
Matt shut off the television, “Okay…talk to me.”
His soft words were enough to snap Robyn out of her daze. She lay between his legs, her back and head resting against his chest. “Just thinking about all that’s happening.”
Kissing the top of her head, Matt nuzzled the soft brown hair. “We’re all worried about that babe.” Running his hands down her arms he stopped at her hands intertwining his fingers with hers. “But I don’t think that is the only thing on your mind.”
She chuckled lightly. “You don’t think the Earth being pushed out of orbit is enough to keep my mind occupied?”
“I think that First Lieutenant Brown threw you for a loop. You didn’t expect to see him. He didn’t expect to see you either.” He raised their clasped hand to his lips. “I know you two left things in a bad way. Maybe this is your chance to settle your differences and have a true good-bye.”
Sitting up, Robyn moved away from his body a bit. “Matt…I…there’s something I didn’t tell you. Not sure I would have ever told you before today.”
Matt sat up straight. “What is it sweetheart?” Her tone set his nerves on end. Reaching over he ran his hand down the back of her neck, feeling the tension there. She still hadn’t answered his question, so he tried again. “I take it, this has to do with Christopher?”
Nodding, she took a deep breath and rushed in, “You know Chris and I were together. We were together for so long. When we broke up, I drank myself into the hospital in a coma. When I woke up, the doctor told me that I’d miscarried. I just…” She shrugged weakly, “I ended leaving without telling Chris.” Jumping up from the couch…she couldn’t sit still…she needed to move.
Matt didn’t know what to say. He’d known about the breakup and Christopher. But this…he would have never imagined. “Oh baby.” Standing up he went over to her, wrapping is arms around her. He laid gentle kisses at the crown of her head. “I’m so sorry baby. I had no idea.”
Caught in memories she didn’t hear him. “I didn’t know I was pregnant, my actions caused the miscarriage.” Her eyes burned with long forgotten guilt. “The doctor told me in the hospital and all I could think about was running. It was one horrible thing after another. I just wanted to go…get away. My parents called in favors.” He heard her chuckle but the sound was dry and desperate. “Funny, I never wanted to use my parents’ names for special attention and when I finally do, it’s to run away. I skulked away in the middle of the night. I didn’t even tell him good bye and damn sure didn’t tell him about the baby.” Pulling away again, she turned to face him. “When I got here, I decided to begin a new life. I buried the memories and kept it movin’ and now we have to work together.”
“Baby…I know you don’t want to hear this, but you should talk to him…tell him. He has a right to know. But you don’t need me to tell you that.” He pulled her back into his arms. Tilting her chin up, he looked down into her eyes, “Right?”
When she nodded, he kissed her gently on her forehead. “I’m here for you baby.”
Wrapping her arms around his waist, she hugged him tightly. “Thank you.”
“Looking at these equations Robz, whatever is coming our way is almost here. It’s a matter of what a few months?”
Head down, she went over the calculations again, shaking her head, “More like a few weeks. Whatever is coming, it will be here very soon. Should be entering our solar system very soon…a matter of a week to two. The calculations are based on the rate of speed the waves were traveling from the starting point. If the object speeds up…”
“There goes our timetable.” Shaking his head Chris looked over the report again. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Not realizing it, he spoke out loud. “She said they were coming…” his voice a bit louder than a whisper, but still she heard.
“What? What did you say?” Robyn heard him but she needed him to repeat it. When he remained silent, she leaned into the monitor and answered for him. “She said they were coming? Who told you that? Christopher!”
Shaking his head, “I…I don’t know. I…when I got caught in the waves at the Karman Line. You…well not you but someone who looked like you showed up…”
“What do you mean ‘showed up’?” But she already knew the answer.
“I don’t know…she was just there Robz. She was there talking to me, telling me that something…they were coming. She never told me who or what. The power came back on and she disappeared. It was less than ten minutes.” Chris ran his hands over his head. Talk of his visitation had taken his mind off of her. She hadn’t opened up or talk to him about anything but work. “I thought that I was going crazy.”
Shaking her head, “No you aren’t crazy. You paid me a visit too, during the tsunami. You told me pretty much the same thing.”
“I told you?” Chris started shaking his head. “What the fuck!” staring at her. “what did I..he…it say?”
She sighed, shaking her head, shrugging her shoulders. “He told me the same thing, that ‘they were coming’. But he didn’t say who ‘they’ were. Chris are we about be invaded?”
“I don’t know babygirl.” The minute the endearment slipped out, he could feel her mood change through the monitor. He pushed forward trying to wash over his lapse. “Why us? Why choose you and me? What are we supposed to do? Did your visitor give you any idea what they might want from us, why ‘they’ are coming to earth?”
She felt like she was in a dryer. Her mind tumbling. Every minute of interaction brought back memories. She’d heard his slip, but he chose to move on and she would follow suit. “There wasn’t time. He appeared in the building while I was clearing civilians from the flooded levels. We were interrupted. He was trying to tell me about the natural disasters, but we didn’t get far. One of the men volunteering to help round up the stranded, showed up. I turned to talk to him and when I turned back you…he was gone.” She tried to remember more, but there was nothing more to remember. “I don’t know why they are contacting us. What if they’ve contacted others? Maybe they want us to…to stop it somehow.” She offered. “I don’t know Chris..”
He stared at her for a moment, visitations and EMP pulses all gone. “Robyn…”
She knew that voice, “Christopher, we need to get this timetable to the Commander.”
“You’ve been putting me off for the last three days.” He stared at her through the monitor.
“We have work to do.” She wasn’t giving him an inch. She knew better. Pointing at the dry erase board they were using to work out the equations, “This is important.”
“I’m not arguing on that point Robyn, but I haven’t seen you in a year.” Pausing he gathered himself, before he continued. “You left without saying goodbye.” He held her gaze, “You hurt me girl.”
Robyn calmed her breathing, she felt the tears burning their way to the surface. “I know….I’m sorry…so sorry. But I…I had to go. Being with you near you just hurt too much. Having to face you was more than I could handle.”
“A phone call at least Robz. You just dropped off the face of the earth and your fam just cut me completely out. They barely say two words to me. I know I deserve that for everything…”
“Chris…don’t. It’s been a year. We’ve moved on.”
“Have we…moved on?” he challenged. “Let me guess Captain Kemp Mr. All-American perfect.” He knew he was overstepping but he didn’t give a fuck.
“Right! Because that’s your business somehow!” She snapped
“It is my business when some other nigga is sampling what’s mine.” He tossed back. Damn…he hadn’t meant to start an argument.
“Yours! When it was it was yours, you couldn’t be bother to be true to it, so please save the territorial bullshit for whatever woman you’re slumming with.” Rolling her eyes. “Let me take a guess, Karrueche.” At the slight tension forming around Chris’ mouth she had her answer. “Yeah…that’s what I thought.”
“Office Fenty! First Lieutenant Brown!” Commander Robeson entered the room, effectively ending their heated conversation.
“Sir!” She stood to attention. Chris did the same.
“You have any new information for me?” Robeson asked.
Robyn crossed in front of the monitor to join the Commander. As she passed him, Chris lowered his voice. “We’re not finished with this.”
Rolling her eyes, “Yes. We are.”
Chris listened as she explained their findings to the Commander. Oh they weren’t over. If he had to fight dirty, then fight dirty he would. His father could pull strings too.
“You look tired baby.” Matt nuzzled her neck, smoothing her hair away from the spot that he was after. “How about I give you the massage tonight instead of you doing me. Hm?”
“Mmmmm…” His lips felt so good and if she were honest with herself, the thought of a massage did sound good. She was tired…Chris had made her tired. Seeing him had thrown her world for a loop but having to interact with him, was more than she could stand. She was glad that for now their work was done. Moving into Matt’s body, she gave into him. Wrapping her arms around his neck, she lifted her mouth high, letting him take control as he pulled her t-shirt over her head, leaving her breast bare to his view and his touch.
Matt trace her full sweet lips, enjoying their plump softness. He knew that Christopher was on her mind, knew that miscarriage was weighing her, so much so that it was sitting between them. He didn’t hold it against her but they needed to talk more. She was starting to draw away from him. If he were honest, he’d admit that he was jealous of her reaction to Brown. The man hadn’t even been here, he was on the goddamn monitor.
He nipped gently at the puffy lower lip, until she whimpered into his mouth, a sign she’d given in completely. Sucking gently on the well teased lip, Matt allowed his hands to cup her face, holding her still as his tongue invaded. He went after the prize, his tongue dueling and subduing hers. She tasted so sweet. Pulling his t-shirt over his head, he tossed it away.
Robyn closed her eyes and deepened the kiss, allowing her own tongue to entice. Her hands began exploring, they moved over the nape of his neck, delicately running over his wide shoulders and down his arms caressing and squeezing formed Biceps. She loved his body Thick and hard…made to wrap around a woman. She continued her exploration, moving back up and over his should blades and roaming downward toward his butt. Their kiss so demanding, that she was sure he was trying to wipe her mind of sad thoughts, of Chris.
Matt wanted more. Allowing one hand to caress its way down her back…he loved her back; so long and elegant. He dreamed of her back. Continuing his seduction, Matt squeezed softly caressing his way down to her delicately curved bottom. Even through the soft material of her white sweats, his fingers sought and found the crease that split her buttocks. Following the crease until both hands cupped her bottom. Fuck the massage. He was too hard for that now.
Never breaking the kiss, Matt carried her back over to the sofa, laying her there, he followed her down. Pulling his sweats off and tossing them to the floor, before pushing her sweats down her long legs, taking her thong with them, dropping them to next to his. Matt caressed every inch he uncovered. Using his knees to spread her legs, he settled into the hot moist apex of her thighs. His hands moved from the back of her knees to her naked buttocks, caressing the soft skin, he pulled her tightly against his hard cock.
Robyn’s own hands were doing a bit of exploration themselves. Matt was so fucking sexy. He loved foreplay, they could stay like this for hours, before he gave in a fucked her brains out. Her hands squeezed at the tight skin of his back continuing down to his butt, the warm brown flesh called to her, kneading the firm skin, she opened her mouth for his invasion yet again.…wanting him.
Hot, hard and heavy. She needed more, he wanted more. Reaching between them he found her hands, raising them above her head, he captured her mouth in yet another bruising kiss. His tongue moved in and out of her mouth mimicking the rhythm his cock would master in minutes. Pulling away from her lips, he sought the soft skin at her throat. “Oh sweet babygirl…” he whispered against the sweetly scented flesh.
His words were like a bucket of ice water, being thrown in her face. Her world immediately became filled with all things Christopher Maurice brown. Pulling her mouth away from his, Robyn had to catch her breath. Shaking her head and dodging his lips. “Honey please…no.” He continued to seek out her sensitive spots. When she looked at him Robyn saw Chris, She couldn’t help the cry that escaped. Like a scar on the skin, he marked her mind, ruled her emotions. After all this time locked, the door was open…again. Pushing against his chest harder, she fought the she
Her cry broke through his haze a bit. However it wasn’t her panic or the words that stopped him. It was the stiffening of her body. He felt her body go cold on him. “What is it baby? What’s wrong? Did I hurt you?” He was stuck between caring for her and calming his raging cock.
Pushing against him until he got up, she rolled off the sofa. Standing naked in front of him, she shook her head as if to clear it and lowered her gaze so that he wouldn’t see her confusion and sadness. “I…nothing…just tired. You were right I think I should have a quick shower and get to bed. I’m so sorry. I’m just so tired.” Bending down she grabbed her pants and underwear, her t-shirt was too far away to care. Running upstairs to the Master Bedroom.
Matt stood watching her run away. He knew this had something to do with Christopher. He could feel it in his bones. ‘That nigga was about to get on his last nerve and he wasn’t even here!’ But what the hell had happened? He was going to find out.
